About DEED

In India, there are around 99 Million school dropouts and around 32 out of 100 children complete their schooling. Child Labour and Exploitation rates are too high as well. There are around 10.13 million children working within the age group 5 – 14 years. Education plays a very important role in any child’s development. However, today it has become a parameter to judge children on their marks and academic achievements.  The financial status of their families, their living circumstances and environment, their mental stability and sense of safety, the availability of required resources play a vital role in their academics. For underprivileged children, these are the reasons for their poor performance resulting in low self-esteem and confidence.

DEED (Dance for Education, Education for Dance) is a project that aims at providing underprivileged children an Interactive Dance-based Curriculum designed on the basis of Arts-based therapy. Through a well-curated curriculum, a team of trained Kathak dancers works with the children to improve their confidence, expressive capabilities and social interaction through regular dance classes. Dance opens the aspect of non-verbal communication for children to explore themselves through movement. Group dance or working in the group is also a very good method for development in their social interaction. This improves leadership qualities and the capacity of handling their own group dynamics.

System Elements

  • A specially designed fun curriculum with interactive dance-based sessions based on the classical dance style of Kathak

  • 2 sessions per week with one organisation. These sessions will be independent of their regular curriculum.
